Heat wave continues in Tillsonburg

Some relief expected on Tuesday.

Southwestern Public Health has issued a heat warning for the region that will continue until Tuesday as Environment Canada forecasts a multi-day stretch of high temperatures.

Daytime highs are expected to reach the low thirties, with humidex values in the mid to high thirties. Overnight lows are forecast in the low twenties. The heat event could extend beyond Tuesday if current conditions persist.

The health unit advises residents to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses, especially among older adults, infants, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals without shelter. Recommended steps include:

Staying in air-conditioned spaces when possible

Limiting outdoor activity during peak UV hours (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcohol or caffeine

Seeking shade and applying SPF 30+ sunscreen

Checking on vulnerable neighbours, family, and friends

Never leaving children, seniors, or pets inside parked vehicles

Heat stroke is considered a medical emergency. Symptoms can include red, hot skin; dizziness; nausea; confusion; or loss of consciousness. Call 911 immediately if these occur, and take steps to cool the person while waiting for help.

Cooling centre locations can be found on Southwestern Public Health’s website.
