London launches Nurse Police Response Team to support mental health and addiction calls

New unit aims to give support to those struggling in London

The London Police Service, in partnership with London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), has officially launched the Nurse Police Response Team.

The new program pairs registered nurses with frontline officers to respond to calls involving mental health and substance use.

Since starting on July 11th, teams have patrolled key areas such as Downtown, Midtown, and Old East Village. Their goal is to connect people directly with healthcare and support, reducing unnecessary trips to hospital emergency departments and involvement in the justice system.

“This partnership brings health care directly to the people who need it most,” said Chief Thai Truong, noting the program builds trust and improves safety. LHSC Vice President Deborah Wiseman added the model “extends care beyond hospital walls and improves outcomes for vulnerable residents.”

During the pilot, the team responded to 148 calls, assisted 165 patients, provided wound care, administered Narcan in overdose cases, and connected dozens with education and resources.
