New pedestrian crossings coming to the area

Wilmot Street South in Drumbo and Tillson Avenue in Tillsonburg are on deck.

Two communities in the region are home to new pedestrian crossings aimed at increasing public safety.

Oxford County Supervisor of Transportation Shawn Vanacker says the added crossover on Wilmot Street South in Drumbo is in a community safety zone and fortifies the crossing guard station already there.

A new pedestrian crossing in Tillsonburg on Tillson Avenue near Annandale Public School is the result of a request by town council.

Vanacker says both new crossovers have visible features to warn motorists they must stop for pedestrians.

Vanacker notes pedestrian safety at crossovers is a shared responsibility.

A reminder to cyclists that if you choose to use a pedestrian crossing you have to get off your bike and walk across.

Fines for not respecting pedestrian crossing can be steep. For drivers, in addition to being out of pocket hundreds or even thousands of dollars, failing to yield at a pedestrian crossing adds four demerit points to your licence.
