Ontario government imposes hiring freeze on provincial agencies, boards and commissions

A hiring freeze has been announced by the province

The Ontario government has announced a hiring freeze across all provincial agencies, boards and commissions starting this weekend.

Treasury Board President Caroline Mulroney said the move is aimed at ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly while focusing resources on frontline services.

Mulroney said provincial agencies have expanded at a rate more than five times that of the Ontario Public Service since 2023. A hiring freeze has been in place within the OPS since 2018.

She added the measure will not affect the province’s major infrastructure agenda, which includes hospital, transit and highway projects.

The government says the freeze builds on its efforts to streamline operations, noting it has reduced the number of provincial agencies from 191 to 143 since 2018.

In the coming weeks, the province will work with affected organizations to align staffing strategies with the new directive.
